We don't have to be happy, we do have to be joyful.
Being happy is being comfortable, healthy and well-fed.
Being joyful is knowing that God's plan is being worked out, and our obedience and submission to it contributes to His glory.
Jesus was not happy on the Cross, but He was joyful.
We fast and pray, we ask for mercy, but we accept whatever comes, punishment or pleasure.

That is something that has seriously saddened me this election: seing Catholics talk about John McCain (or Sarah Palin or even Barack Obama) as if he and not Christ were our hope. Giving voice to despair over the prospect of this election, and seemingly forgetting that this is not really our home.
Oops--I didn't mean you, Steve. But I've seen a lot of Catholics doing it, and I think this post would be a good reminder to them.
"Not my will, but Thy will be done." St. Alphonsus Liguori said that we must have UNIFORMITY with the will of God, which is more than conformity to the will of God. Uniformity means that our will and God's will are the same, so no matter what happens, we are happy because it is what God wills and our will is in complete uniformity with that. Easier said than done.
Kate, I'm sorry I can't disagee more regarding your comment about Catholics viewing mcCain or Palin as if he was our hope. I have not seen this at all. The view of Catholics and non-Catholics alike has been in my experience either that they will vote for McCain grudgingly (although they may hold Palin in high regard) or that they don't like McCain at all because they are still holding to the old Catholic = Democrat Union Worker idea.
I HAVE, however, seen many people - some of them Catholics I'm ashamed to say - who view Obama as nothing short of the Second Coming. In the view of many people the man can do no wrong, even though the Obama supporters I have talked to have very little knowledge about his stance on the issues or even his personal background. I have had more than one Obama supporter critisize me because I disagree with Obama on many economic as well as social issues, some have done this rather, shall we say, vehemently.

Maybe we just read different blogs? I've seen Catholics writing as if everythign depended on McCain, and not on God, whether they're holding their noses or not. And I've certainly seena lot who were just holding their noses.
Kate, I read very few blogs. The people I see who are voting for McCain are people I know or have seen on television or heard on the radio. They are doing so because they are 1) hoping he's actually going to follow through with his talk about lowering taxes and becoming energy independent, and/or 2) simply won't vote for Obama because of the issues. None of them have had more than lukewarm support of McCain.
Many of the people I personally know who are supporting Obama, on the other hand, have near religious fervor in their support of him and will brook no opposition to him or his message. These are otherwise normal people, some of whom are my friends - which makes their reaction all the more disturbing.
