Bacteria aren't as smart as people, but bacteria both help and kill billions of people each year. Bacteria in our guts keep us alive, bacteria in the wrong place kill us. It isn't about intelligence. We can easily kill AI without needing to be as smart as AI.
Bacteria have no brain. But famous "mind control" behaviors—like losing the fear of cats—are typically caused by the single-celled parasite Toxoplasma gondii, normal and pathogenic gut bacteria also exert powerful control over rodent behavior via the gut-brain axis. We have evidence the same thing happens to people. Certainly Toxoplasma gondii can even influence human behaviour.
Let us say AI becomes as much smarter than human beings as mice are smarter than Toxoplasma gondii. People might still be able to control that super-intelligence. Control and killing smarter organisms is not necessarily as big a problem as people make out.
