So, I made the mistake of attending an FSSP Mass today.
Good news: one of the poisonous vipers who "pastor" that parish is being moved to Tyler. This is, of course, good news for Dallas, but it is the infliction of an absolute plague upon the poor diocese of Tyler, which has done nothing to deserve such abuse.
Bad News: Before the serpent announced his departure, he regaled us with a sermon which compared Pope Francis to an apostate Pope, Marcellinus.
Now, he took care to say that one should still follow the Pope, to point out (twice) that no one has the right to judge the Pope, but then he went on to criticize (i.e., judge) the Pope extensively, to the delight of the congregation. He even took pains to prophesy of coming terrors from the see of Rome. It was like sitting through a Baptist sermon, only without the comfort of knowing that it was just a Baptist sermon. A Freemason could not have done a better job of envenoming the congregation against the Pope. And, as the parochial pit viper poured out his pernicious poison, the pastor looked on with an indulgent smile.
But who could complain?
After all, what better day to attack the Holy Father than on Father's Day?
If this is the FSSP's charism, may this venomous order be soon suppressed and quickly, utterly forgotten.
"Orthodox Catholic commentary," you say? It is to laugh.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Jordanes551.
ReplyDeleteThe idea that FSSP priests are automatically orthodox is laughable.
I was around when the FSSP first came to Dallas and I not only attended the Latin Mass when it was held at Christ the King, but I attended and recorded Fr. Buckley's Holy Hours that were held at Christ the King. I also assisted Fr. Buckley in recording apologetics and talks that were later put on CD and sold in the Catholic book store where I worked. When I was teaching Scripture classes at Christ the King under Msgr. Botik's tenure, there were a few people in my class who were active in the FSSP community at the time (early 1990's) and I saw a trend developing which was very anti-Vatican II and anti-Novus Ordo. It sounds like those early beginnings have now blossomed into a full throated dissent. Fr. Buckely was not like that and did not encourage such thought. It saddens me to think that this FSSP parish has morphed into what sounds like extreme views.

ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with the order of priests you mention, but I am familiar with that sort of rhetoric. Was it the French Revolutionary Saint-Just who observed that it is easier to unify a group by pointing to issues they all oppose rather than the values they hold in common?
What's at stake for this priest in making his parishioners feel special, in the know, more Catholic than their neighbors and more Catholic than the Pope? Loyalty? More donations? If his real stake is the care of their souls, he needs to set the example of humility.
You really hate the Latin Mass, don't you. Where you smacked by an incense thurible when you were little?
ReplyDeleteI see I must publish this on your pagfe yet again.
ReplyDelete"2477 Respect for the reputation of persons forbids every attitude and word likely to cause them unjust injury.278 He becomes guilty:
- of rash judgment who, even tacitly, assumes as true, without sufficient foundation, the moral fault of a neighbor;
- of detraction who, without objectively valid reason, discloses another's faults and failings to persons who did not know them;279
- of calumny who, by remarks contrary to the truth, harms the reputation of others and gives occasion for false judgments concerning them."
Take your own advice, Aquinas Dad.
ReplyDeleteStop assuming the worst of me, as you obviously do.
As for what I wrote, it accurately summarizes what a priest said during a public sermon in a public Mass. No possibility of calumny or detraction there, nor of rash judgement.
Steve,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I don't doubt your report for a minute. Had I been there and seen that I would have a) written to the bishop asking that this priest have his faculties to preach suspended for a time; b) written to his superiors in the FSSP saying something to the effect that I love the TLM, but this kind of preaching is going to lead to the order being suppressed and possibly the TLM along with it. Copies of this correspondence to the pastor, to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, and to the priest in question.
Not having witnessed this travesty myself, I am in no position to write any such letter, but I strongly urge you to do so. For your convenience I am supplying the relevant addresses.

The FSSP is an orthodox order but logically just because you encountered one Radtrad that doesn't condemn the whole order.
ReplyDeleteYou should take Lee's advice.

"First of all, I don't doubt your report for a minute."
ReplyDeleteIn the past, Steve has falsely accused an FSSP priest of anti-semitism, misrepresenting what he'd said about the role of the unbelieving Jews in the death of Christ, and he has attacked an FSSP priest for maintaining that the limbo of infants is true (Steve thinks anyone who believes in the limbus infantium is a heretic, even though the Church says Catholics may continue to believe in it since it doesn't contradict the Faith in any way). I don't think it's wise to trust his report this time either.
I know a few FSSP priests and have found them very solid and knowledgeable. They have a heart for the faith that has indeed been lacking since Vatican II. The FSSP accepts the council from what I have learned but at the same time point out the abuses that occurred by liberals that hijacked the council. I have been attending the Latin Mass here in Fort Worth for about seven years or so and have to agree that the Novis Ordo is less Christos concentric than the Latin mass. As a convert to the faith I read my way into the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church and came to the conclusion that the Church is indeed in Crisis. I have attended Novis Ordo Mass and found that some are really good and some are just so very irreverent. The Holy fire in some places has been removed from the alter and moved to a separate room off to the side. Many Marian apparitions since 1650 and our Lady of Good Success to Akita Japan predicted the Crisis. As a former Protestant I realized that you either accept the faith in its entirety or you reject it by default in its entirety. The Vatican acknowledges the FSSP where as the SSPX has been excommunicated for rebellion. The only problem with Vatican II is that too many things were left open to interpretation. The faith of the first century is the same faith that we must hold to today. Far too many Catholics want to change the faith rather than obey the faith. I believe that there will be a Vatican III when the fog of error clears and the Church will find her way once again. The errors of Russia have even infiltrated the Church. Mother Mary will prevail in the end and the Catholic faith will once again shine as the light she is intended to be.

Thank God for the priests and religious of the FSSP and the ICKSP. Someone has to be the guardians of orthodoxy in this age of scandal and heresy.
ReplyDeleteKnowing this so-called "viper," I can guarantee you've taken what he's said out of context. Funny how he's also attacked by the SSPX for being too "Novus Ordo." When he's attacked by both extremes, that's a pretty good sign he's right on track.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Rob and Unknown, and I also know the priest being spoken of, and heard this homily at Mater Dei. I thank God for priests like this "Viper".
ReplyDeleteNow that it is end of 2020 and the Pope has proven to be anything but a Catholic Shepherd, maybe you people will see that that FSSP priest was correct! Or perhaps you prefer to worship a Pachimama as the other disidentes within the Vatican, glorify homosexual priests and Bishops, and of course forgive the pedophile of all pedophiles and then raise to to office of Cardinal all the Bishops whom are in total agreement with his perverse way of thinking. If that’s what you think is a great Pope, I feel sorry for you Steve Kellmeyer and all of your followers!
