It was the teaching nuns that kept the school going because they worked for little pay. By the 1960's, the teaching nuns at St. Ann's were past retirement age and no replacements were expected. The lay teachers were usually fresh out of college, signed on for one year and left for more lucrative jobs. My mother worked there for 15 years, taking on many tasks for the same salary.
